During US Senator Patrick Leahy’s visit to Hanoi on Thursday, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung suggested both legislative bodies enhance their cooperation to promote a swift recognition of Vietnam as a market economy.
Leahy was heading a bicameral, bipartisan congressional delegation to Vietnam.
During his reception of the visiting senator, Hung said the two countries should work together on negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to ensure agreements benefiting both sides and avoid snags that could affect bilateral economic and trade ties.
Vietnam wishes that the US Congress will allocate sufficient funding to deal with humanitarian issues in Vietnam, he said.
Senator Leahy said his delegation is seeking opportunities to strengthen relations between the two countries as well as the two legislative bodies.
He affirmed his support for US efforts in addressing consequences of the war and fostering ties between the two countries’ peoples.
On Thursday afternoon, Leahy and his delegation met with Party Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
During their four-day visit, US lawmakers will meet with representatives from civil society groups, Vietnamese law students and participants in US-Vietnam exchange programs, and US business representatives. In Hanoi they will also meet with US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy.
And in Da Nang, Leahy’s delegation will visit a dioxin (Agent Orange) remediation site where the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is a partner and a hospital and wheelchair distribution center which receives funding from USAID.
