The 5th International Kite Festival 2014 will be held in the southern coastal town of Vung Tau near Ho Chi Minh City May 8-12, the organizers announced Friday.
The event, themed “Flying with Vietnam“, is expected to bring artisans from 22 nations and territories including the Europe, America, Asia and Australia, said Tran Tuan Viet, chairman of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province’s Tourism Association
Four Vietnamese teams from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Buon Me Thuot will join local teams from Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
During a press briefing on April 29, Quan Hang Cao, an international kite artisan, and deputy head of the Organizing Board, said Vietnamese artisans will present two aerodynamic kites imitating the images of two characters in Vietnamese folklore named a ten meter long Chu teu (a typical Vietnamese water puppet character) and a 12 meter Co tien (fairy).
A highlight of the festival will be a Vietnamese-Canadian artisan’s performance of dieu sao (flute kite), a kind of Vietnamese kite, which can be controlled with two strings or four strings.
A series of other activities including a freestyle kite performances, Rokkaku kite flying competition and a kite-making course will also be held during the five-day event.
The opening ceremony of the festival will take place in the hall of Vung Tau’s Intourco Resort and will be followed by kite performances and competitions at Paradise Resort Golf Course, Vung Tau Tourism Market Area, Bien Dong Resort and Vung Tau Intourco Resort (all in Vung Tau).
A number of activities will also be held in the area near the Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial administrative center on Truong Chinh Street, Phuoc Trung Ward, Ba Ria Town.
