Dang Thu Thao of Can Tho City was crowned Miss Vietnam Oceans 2014 in the south central beach town of Phan Thiet on Sunday (May 25).
The second-runner up was Le Thi Van Quynh of Hanoi and the first runner-up Le Thi Ha Thu of ttje central province of Thua Thien-Hue.
The 19-year-old beauty is the first winner of the Miss Vietnam Oceans — a pageant jointly organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund and the Vo Viet Chung Company.
“I will try to enroll in Tay Do University’s Financial and Banking Faculty and participate in environmental protection projects in Vietnam and abroad,” Thao told Thanh Nien newspaper after being crowned
Thao said she graduated from high school a year ago and has been working and saving toward her higher education ever since.
Hailing from the Mekong Delta hub of Can Tho, Thao stands 1.71 meter (5 feet 7.32 inches) tall. Her measurements are 91 – 63 – 90 centimeters.
A total of 29 beauties entered the final round against Thao after three others withdrew for health reasons.
The contestants dressed in ao dai (traditional Vietnamese tunics), bikinis and evening gowns.
Only seven advanced to the interview round, which determined the winner and runners-up.
Thao picked the question: “As a young citizen, what would you do to connect young people everywhere to help this generation protect the marine and ocean environment?”
She answered: “As a young citizen living in a society with strong social networks, I think I would use Facebook to update, exchange and connect to international friends to raise awareness about the protection of Vietnam’s ocean resources. Everyone must join hands to protect the ocean and make it greener, cleaner and more beautiful.”
In addition to her VND200 million cash award, Thao was handed a VND1.6 billion (nearly US$76,000) crown made of gold, pearls and precious stones, which will later be passed along to future winners of the pageant.
The event’s organizers donated VND400 million raised through donation drives and auctions held during the event to the Vietnamese coast guard and fisheries surveillance force.
Miss Vietnam Oceans 2014 Dang Thu Thao became an ambassador of the Blue Ocean World, a project launched by the event organizers to improve marine environmental protection.
