Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Thanh Cung on May 2 inspected preparations for a national-level ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7) in the northern province of Dien Bien.
After being updated on the overall situation, Cung, who is also deputy head of the event’s organising board, praised efforts of those involved.
He also urged agencies of the ministries of National Defence and Public Security to coordinate with each other in ensuring political security, order and safety during the ceremony.
Dien Bien Phu witnessed a fierce battle in 1954, ending in a Vietnamese victory that put an end to the French colonial rule in the country.
Among the scheduled activities will be an incense offering ceremony at the Hill A1 war heroes’ cemetery and a parade of 15,000 people from Dien Bien province’s stadium and along streets in Dien Bien city on May 7.
A special art programme entitled “Dien Bien Phu – an Eternal Epic” will take place at Dien Bien city’s square on the evening of May 6.-VNA
