QUANG NGAI (VNS) — A second fishing boat from Ly Son island district, part of the central province of Quang Ngai, was attacked and robbed of its cargo by Chinese forces, while operating in waters surrounding Viet Nam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago, the local authority said yesterday.
This is the second fishing boat from Ly Son to be attacked by Chinese ships in the past three days. According to Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Chairman of An Hai fishing Union, the QNg 96147-TS, captained by Duong Van Giau, was pursued by a Chinese warship, before being attacked by two speedboats deployed from the ship.
After coming alongside Captain Giau’s boat, crewmen from the Chinese speedboats jumped onto his vessel, used electrified shock batons to beatfishermen, destroyed all communication devices and removed the sea cucumbers on board, he said.
The incident occurred on May 7 at 15 degrees 45 minutes north latitude and 112 degrees 20 minutes east longitude, said Giau. Due to losing all communications, the boat could not call for help and continued floating at sea until the afternoon of May 9, when another fishing boat from Ly Son discovered it. — VNS
