Sri Lanka supports Vietnam’s stance on demanding China remove its drilling rig HD 981 from Vietnam’s territorial waters and comply with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne made the statement during his talk with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on May 9, regarding the East Vietnam Sea issue.
He said that the issue should be resolved by peaceful measures on the basis of the international law.
The guest also confirmed that his country is ready to cooperate with Vietnam in various fields including science, technology, and crime prevention.
In reply, PM Dung affirmed that Vietnam will try its best to work with Sri Lanka to promote the relations and cooperation between the two countries.
The Vietnamese government leader welcomed Sri Lanka’s delegation led by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne to the United Nations Day of Vesak in Vietnam.
PM Dung also praised Sri Lanka on its achievements over the past years.
The premier proposed that the two nations establish a sub-committee on commerce, enter into a bilateral agreement on trade, and expand trade and tourism cooperation.
He also expressed his hope that Sri Lanka will continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to do business in the South Asian country.
