Nhan Dan/VNA – At least one person was killed and 25 others were injured in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai on the evening of May 5, Thai media have reported.



The US Geological Survey initially reported the magnitude of the quake as 6.0, but the Thai Meteorological Department and National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) later confirmed that it was a 6.3-magnitude quake.


As of 7 am (local time) on May 6, at least 109 aftershocks had been detected with magnitudes from below 3.0 to 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to the NDWC.


Tremors were also felt in the nearby provinces of Chiang Mai, Phrae, Phayao and Lampang, as well as in the capital Bangkok.


Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered relevant agencies to provide assistance to affected areas, where many buildings and roads were damaged in the quake.


Meanwhile, another 5.0-magnitude quake was reported in Chiang Rai province on the morning of May 6, 9km southwest of Mea Suai.
