Police in Ho Chi Minh City arrested a local man and his three Chinese clients in a hotel and restaurant on May 8 as the men illegally shopped for brides.

Police say they caught them red-handed, at both the Xuan Loc hotel and a Lotteria fastfood restaurant, both located in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Phu district

One Chinese suspect had already picked out a local woman; the others were still deliberating. The local broker, identified only as “Hoa” was also taken into custody.

The Chinese suspects confessed to having entered Vietnam in March and having attended numerous bride auctions in the interim.

Police fined the entire group.

Many Vietnamese women from poor families in the Mekong Delta have made national headlines for becoming the victims of beatings, some of which have been fatal, at the hands of their Taiwanese or South Korean husbands, who were either too old or poor to marry local women at home.

The Vietnamese victims all married these men hoping for fairy tale lives. However, most of these arrangements are plagued by language and cultural problems.
