The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) marked its 63rd founding anniversary (June 28, 1951 – 2014) with a ceremony in Phnom Penh on June 28.

Addressing the event, attended by some 10,000 people, CPP honorary president Heng Samrin, who is also the president of the National Assembly (NA), said since the victory over the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal regime in January 1979, under the party’s leadership, Cambodia has gone through various hardships and gained major achievements, becoming a peaceful and stable country with multifaceted developments.

He said CPP’s victory at the NA election in July last year and the municipal, provincial and district council elections in May demonstrate the Cambodian people’s need for the party’s leadership.

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP)’s rejection of the election results and boycott of the parliament have run counter to people’s will, he noted.

Heng Samrin reported that Cambodia’s economic growth rate stood at 7.4 percent in 2013 and is likely to top 7 percent this year.

To maintain the growth pace and improve people’s well-being, the CPP will continue strong improvements in all fields, he said, adding that the party is exerting every effort to settle post-election issues with the CNRP.-VNA
