According to Soc Trang Red Cross leaders, as many as 25 hectares of forests have been planted over the past two years helping mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the areas. In the third phase, the project will plant 20 hectares of forests to contribute to climate change prevention, improve the coastal environment, create a solid shield for natural disaster reduction for local people living in the Hau river’s estuaries.
The project, which was sponsored by the UK Premier Oil Company and German International Cooperation Organization (GIZ) has improved and increased the areas of forests in Tran De district, preventing soil erosion caused by rising sea levels. At the end of 2013, 699,72 hectares of protection forest in the district is in favorable development, helping protect the environment, ecosystems and reduce the negative impact of the global climate change as well as contribute raise awareness of environmental protection among the local people.
Following the success of last projects, local residents will plant over 20 hectares which will expand the areas of protection forests of the district up to 720 hectares, creating safety corridors in the district and improving disaster prevention.
