A fruit festival which kicked off on June 1 at an entertainment complex in Ho Chi Minh City is displaying many types of fruit of strange shapes and weights.
The 2014 Southern Fruit Festival, which runs from June 1 to June 8 at Suoi Tien Amusement Park in District 9, features nearly 200 types of fruit including coconuts, durians, mangos, dragon fruits, and avocados.
Most of the fruits showcased at the fest, which were carefully grown by farmers from numerous southern regions including Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Soc Trang and Dong Thap Provinces, are rare in terms of shapes and weight.
Besides a 50kg heavy, 1 meter long ash gourd which stunned visitors with its shape and impressive weight, other types of fruit such as a 3kg lemon, a 6kg sweet potaton, and an 18kg coconut also amazed thousands of attendees, especially children who came to the event to enjoy their International Children’s Day (June 1).
Several fruits which also attracted visitors’ attention include khom “mao ga” (“Cockscomb” pineapple), vu bo (cow breast), trai ca ri (curry fruit) and trai nhau (Indian Mulberry), mat meo (cat eyes), than lan (lizard).
In addition to the Delicious, Safe Fruit, and Fruit Sculpture Competitions, the festival features a wide range of activities including a 70-stall fruit floating market.
The stalls are boats which offer more than 180 kinds of fruit lasting for over three months, at prices 20-40 percent lower than market prices.
Visitors coming to the event can also see performances that represent special southern cultural characteristics, especially “Don Ca Tai Tu” (traditional southern music) and folk games, and attend shows performed by artists from foreign countries including Korea, Cambodia, and Indonesia.
The fest welcomed around 40,000 visitors during its opening day on June 1.
