(VOV) – The Vietnam Tennis Association in Russia (VITAR) organized the Open Summer Tennis Tournament 2014 on June 7-8 to promote the sport among Vietnamese expatriates in Russia.
The annual event, the sixth of its kind, attracted 50 athletes from Russia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Vietnam.
The players competed in men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Nguyen Hung, Counsellor of the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia, said that the tournament aims to strengthen solidarity among Vietnamese people in Russia and raise funds to support Vietnamese coast guards and fishermen, who are defending national sovereignty in the homeland.
Themed “For the Homeland’s Sea and Islands“, the competition demonstrated the desire of Vietnamese people overseas to stand shoulder to shoulder with the government to defend national sovereignty, after China illegally placed its oil rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and intimidated Vietnamese law enforcement vessels at sea.
