Two Vietnamese coast guards vessels operate in the East Sea.

A top Vietnamese Coast Guard officer said the force has prepared plans to cope with a new oil rig that China is towing into the East Sea, internationally known as South China Sea.

Major-General Nguyen Quang Dam, the commander of Vietnam’s Coast Guard, said the force is keeping a close watch on China’s actions and plans have been made for all possible eventualities.

According to a statement posted on the website of China’s Maritime Safety Administration, the rig is currently 104 nautical miles northeast of Da Nang (Vietnam’s central hub) and 50-60 nautical miles from China’s Hainan Island.

The rig is positioned among several oil rigs China began operating five years ago,” Dam said.

The China National Offshore Oil Corporation will dispatch the rig.

Early last month, China sent its biggest oil rig, a prized $1 billion platform the size of a football field, to explore a block in waters within Vietnam’s 200-miles exclusive economic zone.
