Over one million unemployed in quarter one

The number of unemployed university graduates surged 90,000 compared to the fourth quarter of last year as written in the report the ministry released at a conference held in Hanoi on Tuesday to provide updates about the domestic labor market.


Nguyen Ba Ngoc, deputy director of the Institute of Labor Science and Social Affairs, said there were over one million unemployed in quarter one, rising by 145,800 from last year’s fourth quarter, with jobless females making up 47.2%.


The unemployment rate in this year’s quarter one was 2.21% compared to 1.9% in quarter four of 2013 and 2.27% in quarter one of 2013.



Though the rate of 2.21% was quite low compared to the rates recorded in other countries, the labor quality and productivity, Director of International Labor Organization Country Office for Vietnam Gyorgy Sziraczki said, were too low.


What is notable in the report is the number of jobless people who are holders of university and college degrees made up 4.14% (162,400) and 6.81% (79,100) of the total numbers of such graduates, respectively.


Besides, there were 504,700 young people aged 15-24 unemployed in quarter one, accounting for 6.66% and up 54,400 people from the previous quarter.


The unemployment rate among young people in urban areas was rather high with 12.3%. In addition, female workers have bigger difficulty landing a job than male workers with 7.86% of females compared to 5.66% of males.


The average monthly income in quarter one picked up VND534,000 to around VND4.8 million thanks to Tet bonuses in the quarter.


The report also indicated that the monthly income of the group of people holding senior positions was the highest at VND8.2 million, followed by the group of skilled workers with VND6.9 million while that of the unskilled group was only VND3 million.


The incomes of those working in the finance-banking and real estate sectors were VND8.1 million and VND7.6 million respectively, which were the highest figures. Meanwhile, workers in the agriculture and forestry sectors earned the lowest incomes with only VND3.2 million per month, compared to VND4.5 million of the construction industry and VND5.4 million of the service sector.
