HCMC – U.S. Ambassador David Shear, highlighting growing bilateral ties between America and Vietnam at the July 4 celebration in HCMC on July 2, said the United States is a proud partner of Vietnam.
“Our two countries are contributing to regional and global stability,” he told the Independence Day celebration ceremony at the White Palace Convention Center, which was attended by Deputy Chairman of HCMC Le Manh Ha, the diplomatic corps and the business community, among others.
“Vietnam’s participation in the Proliferation Security Initiative will help counter the threat of WMD proliferation. Vietnam is preparing to deploy UN Peacekeepers for the first time, and Vietnam’s Coast Guard is enhancing the rule of law on the water. In all of this and more, the United States is a proud partner.”
Shear said he is optimistic about the future relations between the U.S. and Vietnam. “As I look out at the faces of the many friends I have worked with over these past few years, I am optimistic about the prospects for our shared future.”
He described as “a sign of the great progress we have made since 1995″ the agreement reached last July between U.S. President Barack Obama and Vietnam’s State President Truong Tan Sang to establish a Comprehensive Partnership during their meeting at the White House.
In the past one year the two nations have been working hard to translate this partnership into reality, he said, noting the two sides had made “some tremendous achievements”.
“Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit in December was a historic milestone and one of the highlights of my time in Vietnam. Secretary of the Treasury (Jack) Lew, Secretary of Commerce (Penny) Pritzker, U.S. Trade Representative (Michael) Froman, EPA Administrator (Gina) McCarthy, and several high-ranking Congressional delegations also visited,” he said.
He added this demonstrated President Obama’s commitment to a deeper relationship with Vietnam.
He noted another highlight in U.S.-Vietnam ties was a sharp rise in two-trade trade. “Our two countries are working together like never before. Since I arrived in 2011, the economic relationship has grown rapidly -with trade growing from 18 billion dollars to 30 billion just in my time here. More American companies are opening up shop in Vietnam and thriving. The Trans Pacific Partnership will bring even greater prosperity.”
There have been a lot of American companies coming to HCMC this year to explore business prospects, he said, and this is a sign that they see a bright future here in Vietnam. “I fully expect these positive trends to continue.”
