VietNamNet Bridge – Huynh Van Don, who lost an arm in an accident while grinding rice, still pulls his wagon full of rice husks 10 km every day in the southern province of Long An.
Don, who is from Hau Nghia Town, Duc Hoa District, has done this job for 30 years. Every day he gets up at 5am to go to the rice mills to buy husks.
Don's life has always been associated with rice. From the age of 17, he worked in rice mills to feed himself. Because of this job, he lost an arm.
After the accident, he began selling rice husks to earn a living. He travels to rice mills to buy husks and then sells them to pancake and noodle processing facilities in the region.
Although he works hard, he earns less than VND100,000 ($5) per day. He can sell six to 10 sacks of husks a day, earning a profit of VND8,000 ($0.4) per sack.
The man lives with his wife, his daughter, son-in-law and a grandchild in a small charity house amid the fields.
His wife has diabetes, so she does housework only. Don said his wish is to be healthy all the time so that he can do his job.
