(VOV) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked relevant agencies to verify the news that Chinese patrol ships detained six Vietnamese fishermen in waters off Hainan Island on July 3, and seek to protect Vietnamese citizens.

Representatives of the Consular Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with representatives of the Hanoi-based Chinese embassy on July 7, requesting China to notify Vietnam of the case.

Chinese authorities said the six Vietnamese fishermen aboard QNg94912TS had been detained in the area about 7 nautical miles off Hainan Island. Other sources said the Vietnamese citizens were fishing in waters of the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 5 directed the Vietnamese embassy in Beijing to work with relevant Chinese agencies to verify the news and take measures to protect these fishermen.
