VGP – Viet Nam, together with other ASEAN member countries, has given top priorities to implement the commitments to the establishment of an ASEAN economic community.
“Enhancing Viet Nam’s role towards an ASEAN economic community by 2015 and after 2015″ was a topic of a conference held by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade in Ha Noi in August 12.
The conference was attended by ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam Nguyen Cam Tu and ERIA’s Executive Director Hidetoshi Nishimura, as well as leading economists in the region and Viet Nam.
The conference focused on sharing experience and initiatives to take full advantages of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to overcome future challenges such as migrant laborers, building legal frameworks, reforming regulations to build up the AEC.
Participants also exchange initiatives and share information among State agencies, private blocs and foreign experts in important issues of ASEAN such as developing small and medium-sized enterprises, joining supply chain and economic integration.
Addressing the conference, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Cam Tu said that in the context that ASEAN is looking forwards an ASEAN Community in general and an ASEAN Economic Community in particular by 2015, the conference is a good opportunity for all members to review their development, effects and impacts of the process to Viet Nam’s economy from the views of ministries, sectors and localities as well as businesses.
ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh said that since its joining of the ASEAN economic community, Vietnam has had strong growths especially in economy by pushing the investment promotion and export enhancement among the bloc’s markets.
“From now until 2015 and after that, the ASEAN community has a lot of things to do, especially in clearing all tax barriers and boosting investment to become an attractive investment area and developing the common economy to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor in the region,” Minh stressed.
The conference is among a program to enhance the capacity of ERIA which has been implemented from 2008 for new members of ASEAN, including Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, with an aim to enhancing integration of the ASEAN economic members./.
