HA NOI (VNS) – Dozens of perennial trees will be chopped to provide space for the building of a metro line from Nhon to Ha Noi Railway Station, the Ha Noi urban railway management unit has said.
An expensive flyover will also be removed to make room for the project.
Le Huy Hoang, deputy director of the management unit, said more than 30 perennial trees in Kim Ma Street in Ba Dinh District would have to go.
“The city has carefully considered matters before making this decision,” he said.
The area around Kim Ma Street and Thu Le Zoo is known as a green area because of the big old trees.
Nguyen Minh Nguyet, a resident in Kim Ma Street, said the metro line was necessary, but to chop down big trees was not a good decision.
“There must be a measure to keep this line of trees,” she said. “It takes many years to grow such trees.To keep them means keeping the city green.”
Nguyen Thanh Trung, a resident of Hoang Hoa Tham Street, said the city must have considered all choices before making the final decision.
“It’s not easy to move the trees to other places. Sometimes we just have to sacrifice,” he said.
Nguyen Xuan Hung, deputy director of Ha Noi Green Tree and Park Company, said he had not heard about the axing.
Hung said the trees were more than 40 years old.
At present, there are more than 200,000 trees representing 150 different species throughout Ha Noi.
The section of rail line from Nhon to Ha Noi Railway Station is about 12.5 kilometres long, including 8.5 kilometres elevated and four kilometres underground.
Total investment in the project will be US$1.57 billion. Work began in 2010 and will finish by November, 2018. – VNS
