Ukraine marks Independence Day with military parades

On Aug 24, Ukraine marked the country’s 23rd year of Independence from the Soviet Union with a parade of soldiers and heavy weaponry through central Kiev.

The country, which declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, used Independence Square to showcase a large military parade featuring a range of military hardware, about 1500 elite troops and hundreds of marching servicemen


President Petro Proshenko, addressing the crowd in Kiev announced that UAH40 billion (nearly USD 3 billion) would be spend in the coming years to re-equip the army.


Dignitaries observing the celebration included Ukrainian government officials, parliament members and foreign diplomats./.
