Pano feedThe U.S. Senate is considering overturning a ban on lethal weapon sales to Vietnam, visiting U.S. Senator Bob Corker said at a meeting in Hanoi on Tuesday.
The senator, who is also a ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, made the statement during his talks with Vietnamese Deputy Defense Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Truong Quang Khanh.
The host and guest also discussed a number of possible cooperation fields between the two countries in the event of the U.S. ending its lethal weapon embargo on Vietnam.
Senator Corker highlighted the fruitful relations between the two countries, and emphasized that the two sides are going to reach an agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The U.S. senator said the promotion of the Vietnam-U.S. rapport in various areas will contribute to peace and stability in Southeast Asia and the world at large.
Deputy Defense Minister Khanh told his guest that the Vietnamese government and people always attach great importance to maintaining peaceful relations with other countries, for the sake of peace, stability, and development.
He added that the Vietnamese State and People’s Army have continually developed defense ties with other countries, including the U.S.
As regards the East Vietnam Sea issues, Senior Lieutenant General Khanh reiterated the Southeast Asian country’s consistent policy of settling disputes through peaceful measures based on international law.
Last month, Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang urged the U.S. to remove its ban on lethal weapon sales to Vietnam soon, which he said is important to demonstrate mutual trust and the full normalization of bilateral ties.
He mentioned the removal at a meeting in Hanoi on July 18 with former U.S. President Bill Clinton who visited and left Vietnam the same day.
The country is among Clinton’s stopovers during his trip covering eight countries, including India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, from July 16 to 23, to promote the operation of the HIV/AIDS prevention foundation named for him – the Clinton Foundation.
