Nhan Dan Online – A Vietnamese delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister, Ha Kim Ngoc participated in the 70th session (Phase II) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand from August 4-8.
Over 30 high-level delegates from ESCAP member countries sat in a ministerial plenary on August 7-8.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Shamshad Akhtar, UN Under-Secretary-General and the ESCAP Executive Secretary stressed that Asia Pacific still provides a momentum for the global economy, saying that ESCAP should improve its performance with a focus on in-need nations, while enhancing strategic partnerships with ASEAN and other regional blocs and making further contributions to building sustainable development goals (SDG) and an agenda for development after 2015.
The delegates discussed issues related to sustainable development, development directions after 2015 and measures to boost regional connectivity through trade, transportation, IT and communication, energy and human linkage.
During the session, 12 resolutions were adopted to promote regional co-operation in economics, trade, infrastructure and environment.
At the plenary session, Ngoc emphasised that countries should strive to consolidate a peaceful and stable environment to boost regional economic connectivity, including ensuring maritime freedom and safety, resolving disputes at sea through peaceful means in accordance with international law and regional commitments. Many delegates agreed with Vietnam’s stance on those issues of mutual concern.
He also made suggestions to enhance effectiveness of regional economic connectivity and integration, while affirming Vietnam’s readiness in co-operation with countries along the Mekong River and partners to promote connectivity and sustainable development.
