Rescuers in the southern province of Binh Duong recovered the body of a nine-year-old boy, who fell into an uncovered street sewer during a heavy downpour over the weekend.
La Van Ty was allegedly swept into the sewer on 22/12 Street in Binh Duong’s Thuan An Town on Saturday that submerged 22/12 Street in around a half meter of water.
After a three-day search, dozens of frogmen recovered his body in a sewer around one kilometer from where he vanished.
Ty, the son of two factory workers, allegedly fell into the uncovered sewer while playing in the rain and was swept away by the floodwater.
Doan Thach Lap, 39, who saw Ty fall into the sewer, said he tried to save the boy but things happened so quickly and the waters flowed so swiftly.
Lap was driving a motorbike across the street when he witnessed the scene.
Soon after the accident, he contacted local police. More than 20 officers and frogmen were sent to the site to search for the boy.
Residents of 22-12 Street said several concrete sewer covers were carried away by rushing water on Saturday.
The street’s sewer system is still being built by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Binh Duong police recovered the body of Le Van Manh, a seven-year-old boy who fell into an uncovered sewer and was swept away by waters in Tan Uyen Town.
Manh was reportedly bathing in the heavy rain at around 5 p.m. when the accident happened.
