Deputy PM Ninh meets with US financial, trade officials

VGP – During a working visit to the US, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh met with the US Trade Representative Michael Froman, Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker on September 15.

During the meeting with Froman, Deputy PM Ninh briefed the host about progress in bilateral negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership(TPP), saying that Viet Nam wanted the US to pay further attention to cutting taxes on textiles and footwear in negotiation while expressing his hope that the US will recognize the country’s market economy status after TPP negotiations are finished.



Regarding intellectual property rights, Deputy PM Ninh said that the US should be more flexible in an approache to intellectual property right, pledging that Viet Nam would actively work with the US to seek acceptable solutions for both sides in the matter.


He also suggested the US devise technical support programs for Viet Nam to implement TPP commitments.


Froman promised to create favorable conditions for Viet Nam’s textiles and footwear while asking Viet Nam to facilitate the access of US pork and poultry to the market and to pay further attention to environmental issues and electronic payment.


He also agreed to provide technical support to Viet Nam to implement the TPP right after the conclusion.


Meeting with Secretary Lew, Ninh valued the US support to Viet Nam in money laundry prevention and suggested the US continue to enhance the technical support to related officers and financial sector.


Lew agreed with Ninh’s suggestions and reminded the guest about further attention to US businesses’ proposals.


On the same day, Secretary Pritzker and Deputy PM Ninh discussed everal issues in bilateral trade ties. Both sides affirmed their resolution in opening a Viet Nam-US direct flight in 2015, boosting bilateral trade relations and quickening TPP negotiations.


Earlier, Deputy PM Ninh met with Professor Jeffrey J. Schott, a leading TPP expert at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Ninh valued the role of the institute and the professor in studying international economic policies, as well as the cooperation between the institute and several Vietnamese agencies.


He expressed his hope that the institute and the professor would continue to support the country in studying TPP’s effects on its economy.
