On September 15, Egypt said plans to build a new Suez Canal would need an estimated USD8 billion. The Suez Canal earns Egypt about USD5 billion a year, a vital source of hard currency for a country suffering both a slump in tourism and foreign investment since the 2011 uprising that preceded e-president Mursi’s term in office.. An official of the Suez Canal Authority reported that the new canal was set to boost annual revenues to USD13.5 billion by 2023. The Suez Canal Authority says the extension is needed to reduce waiting times for vessels from an average of 11 hours to three. The project create a new Suez Canal running parallel to the current channel and running a total length of 72 kilometres. The expansion is expected to double current capacity from 49 to 97 ships a day with construction scheduled to take three years.
