On September 16, the United Union (UN) reported that an estimated USD1.0 billion was needed to fight the Ebola outbreak. At a news conference in Geneva, the Assistant Director General of the World Health Organisation, Bruce Aylward, said that the figure had doubled in the past month alone. The response to the crisis will require USD 987.8 million, with about half needed for the worst-hit country, Liberia. The number of Ebola cases could rise to 20,000 people by the end of the year, with Guinea accounting for 16 percent of infections, Sierra Leone 34 percent and Liberia a full 40 percent. US President Barack Obama has called on the world to “act fast” to stop West Africa’s Ebola epidemic before “hundreds of thousands” are infected. The Ebola outbreak has now killed more than 2,400 people and infected over 4,700 people, according to the new toll released by the WHO./. |
