On September 16, French Prime Minister (PM), Manuel Valls, won a crucial vote of confidence from parliament. The PM won 269-244 vote, with 53 abstentions and pledged he would not be swayed from his key economic reforms, which aimed at lifting France out of its economic crisis. In his speech before the confidence vote, Valls appealed to his party’s left wing, saying economic reforms were necessary to boost France’s competiveness, but they did not have to destroy France’s social model. The reforms include EUR50 billion of public spending cuts in the next three years while easing taxes for business. However, he ruled out changes to France’s 35-hour work week and cuts to the minimum wage, while promising new benefits to poor pensioners on less than EUR 1,200 a month. The first challenge for Valls and President Francois Hollande, will be to pass the 2015 budget, which will be unveiled on October 1. The budget will include EUR21 billion of the EUR50 billion in public spending cuts that the government has promised for the 2015-2017 period./. |
