(VOV) – Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) General Director Nguyen Dang Tien has said renovation is a compulsory task for VOV to master modern technology and produce quality outputs to cater to the diverse taste of audiences.
Marking the national radio’s 69th anniversary (September 7), Tien shed light on VOV’s major developments and outlined orientations for VOV in the coming years, in an interview granted to senior VOV reporter Doan Quang.
Following are excerpts from the interview.
VOV General Director says renovation is a must for VOV to improve the quality of its outputs and raise its profile
VOV:What do you think about VOV’s operation this year ahead of the radio’s 70th anniversary in 2015?Tien: I swell with both pride and responsibility, and I believe this is the common sense of all VOV staff at this time of year. Present-day staff are very proud to inherit the great legacy left behind by VOV predecessors over the past 69 years. They are very proud that VOV has stood firm and received increased trust from audiences despite the country’s difficult times and fierce competition among media agencies.
VOV is bringing into full play the combined strength of its four media genres: radio, television, print and online services to provide audiences with up-to-date information about happenings in Vietnam and the world in a rapid, comprehensive, and effective manner.
For example, VOV is one of the national media agencies taking the lead in running wide coverage on issues relating to sea sovereignty, security, national defence, and socio-economic development. Whenever and wherever an event takes place, VOV staff are dispatched to report and make an in-depth analysis of it.
Their all-out efforts are rewarded at the annual National Press Awards, acknowledging their considerable growth in professional journalism. It’s worth mentioning that VOV won two first prizes, three second prizes, four third prizes, and two consolation prizes at the National Press Awards 2013. Notably VOV online grabbed a second prize for the first time.
We also feel a responsibility to the Party and people for meeting tasks during the Doi Moi (Renewal) process and building up the VOV brand. In the digital era, renovation is a must for radio broadcasters to attract audiences and elevate its position.
To this end, VOV has been carrying out a renovation strategy in all editorial and technical areas to improve the quality of its outputs.
VOV: VOV is to launch a new National Assembly TV channel next month – a project to celebrate its 69th anniversary. Could you give us a brief on the progress of the project?Tien: After the Government authorised VOV to establish a national traffic channel in Hanoi and HCM City, the National Assembly entrusted VOV with a project to develop a legislature TV channel, testifying to the increased trust of the Government and National Assembly in the national radio. VOV is putting the finishing touches to this new TV channel due to be launched at the upcoming year-end session of the legislature.
All reporters of the National Assembly TV channel are working hard for the launch of the channel in October
VOV:What will VOV do to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year?Tien: VOV has launched a special emulation campaign in the lead up to its 70th anniversary in 2015. All VOV channels, online and print newspapers have registered to take part in the campaign, pledging to complete significant works to mark the event.
For the first time we will present the tittle “VOV Exemplary Role Model” to all VOV staff and “VOV Pen” to reporters at the end of the campaign, to acknowledge their contributions and efforts to the radio’s development.
VOV is making full use of all resources to turn it into a multimedia group, targeting audiences of all social strata. It is no easy task for VOV given numerous difficulties and challenges ahead, including the fierce competition in the media industry.
I believe with solidarity of VOV staff and their constant efforts to take a vanguard role in renovation, VOV will deliberately accomplish this tough task entrusted to by the Party, State, Government, National Assembly and people.
