Thanh Nien Newspaper awarded scholarships to 20 college freshman who are the children of poor fishermen in the north-central province of Quang Tri on Thursday.

The ceremony was held as part of a scholarship program initiated by Thanh Nien to give 360 scholarships, each worth VND5 million (US$236), to the children of fishermen and fisheries surveillance officers in 15 provinces and cities across the country.

The scholarship fund now contains VND1.8 billion ($85,000), of which Kien Long Bank contributed VND1 billion ($47,225).

The rest came from Thanh Nien‘s readers.

The scholarship was named after Nguyen Thai Binh, a South Vietnamese student who hijacked a US airplane in 1972 and became a symbol of the anti-war movement in the 1970s.

Among the 20 students who were awarded scholarships on Thursday was Duong Van Thanh, the son of a fisherman in Quang Tri’s Trieu Phong District, who is only around one meter tall.

Thanh suffers from poor health, but still managed to gain admission to Vietnam National University’s Ho Chi Minh City campus.

The young man recently arrived in HCMC to begin university. He was accompanied by his mother, who rented an apartment to take care of him.

Thanh’s mother said she will find a job to earn money to support his studies.
