(VOV) – Vietnam plays a decisive role in Russia’s “Look East Policy” and serves as a diplomatic bridge linking expanded friendship and accelerated economic cooperation between ASEAN member nations and Russia.
The view was shared by participants at an international conference “Development Cooperation between Vietnam-ASEAN and Russia: Reality and Prospects” in Hanoi on September 15.
Speakers at the two-day conference stated that although ASEAN does not directly border with Russia, it harbours enormous economic, military, maritime, security and politic benefits for the region.
Thus enhancing Russia’s role in the Asia-Pacific region, including ASEAN, facilitates not only the development of the Russian Federation, but that of ASEAN and its member nations as well.
Vietnam was one of the few countries which had early established economic cooperative relations with Russia and was instrumental in setting up the economic links among ASEAN countries like Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia with the Eurasian country, they said.
At the conference, Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan affirmed Vietnam is an important link in Russia-ASEAN relations.
Vietnam’s consistent policy is to improve overall comprehensive relations between ASEAN and Russia, contributing to peace, stability, and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and the world, Doan said.
She underlined the need to identify priority areas in ASEAN-Russia cooperation to bring into full play the potential of each side, to help address regional issues and create opportunities for development.
