The Cress Centre of the National University of Hanoi and Xuan Lien Nature Reserve in Thanh Hoa Province discovered about 30 Roosevelt’s muntjac, a species believed to have gone extinct 84 years ago.
Roosevelt’s muntjacs captured on film
Between 2012 and 2014, the Cress Centre has cooperated with Xuan Lien Natural Reserve on a project to find and protect muntjac deer there. During their search, they captured an image of the Roosevelt’s muntjac deer, and their droppings in the reserve. In addition, they even found the skin and horn of one inside a local’s house.
The group then carried out DNA tests at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and compared their samples with the Roosevelt’s muntjac samples being kept at the American Museum of Natural History. The results showed that it was indeed from the species formerly thought extinct.
The group set up camera traps where they found the tracks and discovered that there are about 30 left in the reserve. They are now planning to breed and preserve this rare species.
