The German Government is developing a special aircraft designed to transport Ebola patients. The German government signed a contract with the LufthansaAirline on the development of special aircraft for Ebola patients, which are to be made available by mid-November. There are currently only two aircraft in the world equipped for the transport of critically ill Ebola patients and, both the Gulfstream G-III jets belong to the US-based, Phoenix Air company. The US planes capable of carrying only one patient at a time, costs from between USD200,000 to USD1 million per trip. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of October 14, 4,555 people had died from the 9,216 registered cases of contracting the virus. Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea have been and remain the worst hit countries. The WHO said the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is “the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times“. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates by January of 2015 there will be 1.4 million cases of Ebola in western Africa. The first person to be diagnosed with the virus in America has died and several other individuals are being monitored around the world./. |
