According to a report from the Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee, the Ho Chi Minh city Customs Department has managed 13 cases involving the transportation of illegal drugs by air in nine months of 2014 with seizures of a value of over VND100 billion.

The exhibits of the 13 cases include more than 22kg chemical precursors used in the manufacture of illegal drugs, 11kg of cocaine, 4.22kg of heroine and 15,855 tablets of medicine containing addictive substances.

Drug traffickers usually change sophisticated concealment method to evade detection by authorities.

The most recent case found at the Tan Son Nhat international airport, involved a Thai national who had concealed the illegal cargo amongst incense in consigned luggage. The profile of carriers also changes with the most recent usually being women who are in troubled circumstances and often users of the drugs themselves and who have limited knowledge of the penalties involved for their actions.

Continued discovery of the different strategies used by the traffickers will ensure that the authorities will maintain security and order./.
