On October 21st, the Star of Malaysia said Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, and senior US civil aviation officials would meet to discuss measures to improve security in the sector. The meeting will take place in Washington DC later this week and it comes in the wake of the tragedies involving Malaysia Airlines MH370 and MH17 flights in March and July respectively. In a statement on October 20th, Minister Liow said, “We would like to assure the families that MH370 remains a top priority and the Malaysian Government is fully dedicated to continuing the search”. He said since June, more than 130,000 sq km of the seabed in the Southern Indian Ocean had been mapped in the search for the aircraft, and the mapping is expected to continue until the end of this month. On Oct 6th, the search moved to the next phase, namely the underwater search, when the vessel GO Phoenix , supplied by the Malaysian government, arrived in the vicinity of the search area, he added. The disappearance of MH370 is arguably the greatest mystery in the history of commercial flight, with an extensive search failing to turn up a single piece of definitive evidence of its whereabouts. MH370 vanished on March 8, after leaving Kuala Lumpur with 239 people on board, including six Australians./. |
