Ho Chi Minh City police have told prosecutors to charge a student with killing and dismembering his abusive gay partner, apparently to end their relationship, after wrapping up investigations.

Tran Nhat Duy, 20, is set to faces charges of “murder” and “robbery”.

Dang Gia Linh, 22, his girlfriend, will be charged with being “an accessory after the fact” and selling stolen property.

The police said Duy began a relationship with Van Anh Tuan, 30, as a school student in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang — where all three grew up – in 2011.

Tuan would often threaten Duy about having relationships with others and used to hit him.

In October 2013 Tuan followed Duy to Ho Chi Minh City after the latter enrolled at the Hoa Sen University and also met and fell in love with classmate Linh.

Tuan shared a room with Duy. He reportedly beat up Duy often, prompting Duy to hatch a plan to kill him.

Duy confessed that he bought potassium cyanide in May and put it in Tuan’s noodles but the poison only caused the man to throw up.

On May 19 he allegedly put the same poison in Tuan’s water and the latter died soon afterwards.

A day later Duy sold Tuan’s mobile phone for VND1.2 million. The same evening he told Linh about the murder.

The next day the two sold Tuan’s motorbike for VND8.8 million. Duy bought a hand saw and an electric saw, tape, and bags and cut off his victim’s head and limbs.

Leaving the headless torso in the room, the two went around Tien Giang and Lam Dong provinces and discarded the sawn off parts.

On May 23 the owner of Duy’s hired apartment got suspicious of a foul smell emanating from the place and called the police, who came and found Tuan’s torso in the room.

Duy and Linh, who were hiding in Tien Giang, were arrested a day later.
