PM Nguyen Tan Dung met with President Pranab Mukherjee during the latter’s Vietnam visit in September 2014.
NDO- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on October 27 for a three-day official visit to India at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
The visit − taking place in the context of a traditional friendship and strategic partnership on extensive development − is an event of great significance intended to strongly accelerate the bilateral strategic partnership with a focus on economic co-operation. At the same time, the visit aims to expand bilateral co-operation in other fields and allow discussions on regional and international matters of mutual concern.
Vietnam and India enjoy a time-honoured relationship founded by President Ho Chi Minh and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and nurtured by generations of Vietnamese and Indian leaders and citizens.
They established diplomatic ties in 1972 and later a strategic partnership in 2007 based on five pillars: politics, defence-security, economy-trade, science-technology, and culture and personnel training.
India regards Vietnam as a pillar in its Look East policy while Vietnam has maintained a consistent policy which attaches great importance to developing friendly relations and a traditional strategic partnership with India.
This foundation creates favourable conditions for the two countries to promote opportunities and potential for co-operation in all fields.
Vietnam and India have become important partners, with bilateral trade increasing by an average 16% each year since 2009, reaching US$5.23 billion in 2013, up 32% over 2012. The two sides aim to record US$7 billion in trade by 2015 and US$15 billion in 2020.
India has poured US$254.5 million into 78 projects in Vietnam. Investment between the two countries has seen positive signs and is expected to grow rapidly in the future when the TATA Group of India starts Long Phu II thermal power projects worth US$1.8 billion in Soc Trang province. Bilateral co-operation in credit, science – technology, and education – training has achieved positive results. Cultural and tourism activities as well as people exchange between the two countries have been organised regularly.
Vietnam and India have also closely co-ordinated and provided support for each other at regional and international forums, including those in the framework of ASEAN-India, East Asia Summit (EAS), WTO, UN and Non-aligned Movements.
India recognised Vietnam’s market economy in 2009 and affirmed its support for resolving disputes in the East Sea by peaceful measures in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in order to ensure security, safety and freedom of marine in the Asia – Pacific region.
May the official visit to India by President Nguyen Tan Dung be successful, thus creating momentum to brining the Vietnam-India strategic partnership to a higher level with a focus, among others, on economic development, for the benefit of both peoples and for peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and around the world.
