The model of producing high-quality rice towards VietGAP standards has been deployed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development since 2008. In Phu Yen province, the model has been deployed and chaired by Master Truong Van Tuan, Deputy Head of the Plant Protection Division, until now, hundreds of farmer-households have been transferred the technology and manufacturing processes.

In Phu Yen, the model of producing VietGAP rice has been implemented since 2012. Currently,4 models have been developed in the two districts of Tay Hoa, Phu Hoa. Each crop, the model was applied in an area of 10 ha, seeding high-quality rice, sowed in row with 6kg/acre (120 kg/ha). On the control field of 1,000m2, commercial rice varieties were used, sowed spreadly with 10kg/acre (200 kg/ha). Accordingly, in the 2013-2014 winter-spring crop, in Hoa My Tay commune (Tay Hoa district), the Provincial Plant Protection Division deployed the model of producing quality-rice towards VietGAP on the 5-ha area, using the varieties of prototypal ML48, sowing in row. As a result, the model yield was estimated at over 65.5 tons/ha, 4 quintals/ha higher than the control yield, brigning about higher profits over control fields at nearly VND 2.6 million/ha. Mr. Tran Van Thai, Deputy Director of Agriculture and Cooperative-General Service Cooperative of Hoa My Tay, let known: “Cultivating rice under VietGAP standards requires ensuringsowing time, seeding and sowing in row; together with implementing the processes of manure, care, controlling weeds and pest phased growth of rice plants. Not only reducing the amount of seed and fertilizer costs but also decreasing plant protection chemicals, so the model brings about higher profit”.

Master Truong Van Tuan, Deputy Head of the Provincial Plant Protection Division, let known: During the process of deploying the model, farmers were aware of the importance of applying technical advances in rice production. Farmers actively visit their fields, control pest, exchange with technical cadres and other farmers, boldly apply the model’s technical solutions for rice area beyond the model. Also according to Mr. Tuan, previously, farmers used meat rice as breeds with thick sowing of seeds of about 10 kg to 12 kg / acre (200 kg to 240 kg/ha); therefore, the rice plants poorly grow and tiller, consuming much fertilizer, arising pest. When the model is deployed, farmers are guided how to use the pure breed, the technique of seeding in row, with the sparse density with suitable seed being used, which helped save from 80 kg to 120 kg of seed/ha, rice plants grow well. From the model, nearly 300 farmers have been transferred technology, manufacturing processes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Head of Agriculture Division (Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) confirmed: In the recent years, the quality-rice-production model towards VietGAP standards has helped farmers limit using plant protection chemicals, improve product quality, thereby contributing to lower production costs, increasing income for farmers. From the results of the model, the Agriculture sector will expand the area of manufacturing, towards sustainable agricultural development.
