The scholarships were presented as part of a program run by the newspaper to give support to needy students.

The awards ceremony was held yesterday in Can Tho City, the delta’s hub, with the participation of Le Hung Dung, chairman of the local People’s Committee.

Tuoi Tre and many companies have joined hands to extend help to communities and students in all 63 provinces across the nation,” Dung said.

The program has helped poor students pursue their academic dreams, he stressed.

Apart from the fund of VND1.085 billion ($52,200) for 217 students in the Mekong Delta, the scholarship program has given away further grants to nearly 1,400 disadvantaged students in other provinces since the start of the 2014 school year.

An academic year in Vietnam often begins in late August or early September and ends in late May or early June.

In total, the program has awarded scholarships worth over VND8 billion ($384,600) this year.

Tuoi Tre plans to raise funds for a total of 1,800 scholarships in 2014.
