The Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday arrested the director of a Hanoi-based company for allegedly blackmailing the former chairwoman of the state-run PetroVietnam Energy Technology Corporation (PV EIC) who has already been dogged by allegations of financial wrongdoings.
43-year-old Nguyen Anh Tuan, general director of the Viet Finance Group, is being investigated for blackmailing Vu Thuy Hue, the former PV EIC chairwoman, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported, citing police documents.
Tuan lives in Phu Nhuan District in Ho Chi Minh City.
Police say Tuan confessed that PV EIC’s new leadership had complained about Hue’s misconduct at the company from 2009 to 2013.
Capitalizing on the information, he enlisted a reporter to prepare an article on the matter, which he allegedly attempted to use to blackmail Hue for US$100,000.
Hue refused to participate in his scheme.
The article, which detailed her alleged mismanagement and poor investments at PV EIC (particularly in the real estate sector), was later published by Kinh Doanh va Phap Luat (Trade and Law) newspaper.
Police say Tuan continued to having blackmailed Hue, prompting her to go to the police, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
According to Tuoi Tre, Hue and the company’s former general director Nguyen Van Que allegedly approved the purchase of five apartments in HCMC for VND27.9 billion ($1.3 million).
The apartments were purchased from Hue’s parents, who had bought them for just VND250 million in 2007, according to the report.
Police say Tuan has since confessed that someone had hired him to do so — without releasing the identity of the person involved.
It is not clear yet as to whether Hue was fired or disciplined because of such alleged misconducts.
An investigation remains underway.
