Police in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An Sunday arrested a suspect for placing a bomb in a passenger bus that went off, severely injuring three people.
Le Duc De, 27, a plaster cladding worker, allegedly tried to send a hand-made bomb as a “gift” to a business adversary in the province, according to the police.
He bought some explosives and a detonator to make the bomb, and hid it in a mini speaker.
Colonel Tran Si Phang, the police chief of Nghi Loc District, said De was arrested at his home.
“De was a plaster cladding worker. But he had conflicts with a colleague called Tung [in the province's Quynh Luu District], and wanted revenge,” he told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
De gave the package to bus driver Phan Dinh Ninh, 39, on September 21 for delivering to Tung.
Ninh took it with him on the bus on September 30. When the vehicle reached Quynh Luu District, Ninh called Tung’s number on the package, but Tung said he was in Hanoi and neither he nor his wife was expecting a package.
Ninh drove on to Hanoi and Tung still did not show up.
That afternoon Ninh’s assistant, Thai Viet Hao, 35, checked the package and found the speaker inside.
He turned it on only to set off the bomb.
The blast severed both of Hao’s hands, severely injured his eyes and face, and broke his legs. A window shattered and the windshield cracked.
Ninh received injuries on his back, and another assistant, Tran Van Tam, 34, on his face.
Police rushed them to hospital.
The 10 passengers in the bus were safe since they were seated at a distance.
