— At a meeting of the National Assembly in Hanoi on Friday, many deputies expressed their consent on the project to build the multi-billion US dollar Long Thanh Airport project in southern province of Dong Nai. A modern international airport is necessary to meet the growing demand of aviation transport, contributing to national development and protection of defense and security, they said. The airport construction’s first phase will cost around US$7.8 billion.|



— National Assembly deputies are scheduled to conduct a confidence vote for 50 high-ranking officials at a NA meeting on Saturday. A list of these officials, who have been elected or appointed by the NA, was approved by a resolution passed by the NA on Friday.

— The Nha Trang Port Authority in Nha Trang city of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa will today announce the establishment of its representative office in the province’s Truong Sa (Spratly) island district. This office will handle all procedures for vessels to enter and leave the waters of the archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea, said Pham Van Chuong, director of the Nha Trang Port Authority.


— An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit A Luoi District in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue at around 8:19 pm on Thursday, with its epicenter being 8.4 km underground. There were no reports about property damage or casualties. On May 15, the district was also hit by another quake, which was stronger, at 4.7 degrees.


— Sixteen hospitals, three universities, a project management unit, and 10 other entities have submitted their reports to the Health Ministry about their purchases of medical products from U.S-based Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc., which has reportedly admitted to paying US$2.2 million in bribes to Vietnamese health officials in exchange for contracts to provide medical products to health facilities in Vietnam, Health Deputy Minister Pham Le Tuan said on Thursday.


— Police in the southern province of Tien Giang have detained 53 people for taking part in an illegal cockfighting in Binh Nghi Commune, Go Cong Dong District on Friday. The police confiscated VND268 million (US$12,580) from the cockfighters.

— According to its equitization plan, Vietnam Airlines, on Friday sold by auction more than 49 million shares, equivalent to 3.5 percent of its charter capital of over VND14.1 trillion (US$661.7 million). The average auction price is VND22,307 ($1.04) per share. Besides the auction, the carrier will also sell 20 percent stake to its strategic partners and 1.5 percent stake to its employees.


— Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export earnings is expected to hit a record of US$1.4 billion in 2014, up by 40 percent from last year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Over the past ten months of this year, the country’s export turnover from the commodities amounted to $1.2 billion. By the end of the third quarter of 2014, China, Japan and South Korea remained the three largest importers of Vietnamese fruit and vegetable.

— The Ministry of Information and Communications’ Department of Publication, Printing and Issuance has requested that local departments of information communications nationwide revoke eight Vietnamese dictionaries which have been found containing unapproved contents.


Lifestyle


— A two-day Japanese music and art festival, with a theme of “Cool Japan,” will kick off Saturday morning in 23/9 Park at 2 Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, with the participation of 40 Japanese firms coming from Japan and 10 others that are operating in Vietnam. The festival is free to the public.

— Well-known England striker Wayne Rooney will make his 100th England appearance on Saturday when the England squad takes on Slovenia in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley at 12 am on Saturday (Vietnam time).
