PANO – The national campaign, “Working together to end violence against women and girls”, was kickstarted on November 18th in Hanoi by the United Nations in Vietnam, Vietnam’s ministries, associations and relevant organs in response to the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls (November 25th), launched by the United Nations.
The month-long event calls upon the whole society, especially men to end violence against women and girls in Vietnam through a series of activities, such as seminars, exhibitions, parades and runs in 12 provinces and cities across the country. These activities will be broadcast on mass media.
Violence has impacts on not only women’s and girls’ physical and spiritual life, but also household economies and the entire society. According to UN’s statistics, economic losses caused by violence accounted for 1.5% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2012. More seriously, violence holds back economic development and increases poverty.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Huynh Vinh Ai affirmed the importance of the coordination among organs and organizations in eliminating and preventing domestic violence.
UN Permanent Coordinator Pratibha Mehta said it was essential to involve boys and girls in social activities and build up the relations between males and females if we wanted to end violence and build up fine relationship.
