New Zealand’s special agricultural trade envoy Mike Petersen will undertake an official visit to Vietnam from December 1st-5th.


The visit again highlights New Zealand’s commitment to the ongoing development of its relationship with Vietnam, particularly in the areas of trade and agriculture. It is an opportunity to develop further understanding of each country’s agricultural trade interests, Vietnam’s agribusiness sector and potential partnerships with New Zealand.


Trade in agricultural products is an important part of the bilateral trade between the two sides. New Zealand’s goods exports to Vietnam are predominantly dairy products (52%) followed by wood products (11%). Food and beverage products including nuts, fish and coffee make up an important part of Vietnam’s exports to New Zealand.


According a press release issued by the New Zealand on November 29th, the two nations already have a well-developed relationship in respect of agriculture and trade, are Parties of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA, and are currently negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Partnership.


Through the New Zealand Aid Program, New Zealand also supports the development of Vietnam’s agricultural sector with programs focusing on value added agricultural and livestock production that benefits farmers, develops capacity of small and medium enterprises, and draws on best practice and innovative New Zealand experience and expertise whenever possible.


‘This visit is the very first visit of New Zealand special envoy to Vietnam, which reflects the growing importance New Zealand places on its relationship with Vietnam in agriculture and agricultural trade. Next year, New Zealand and Vietnam will celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations, an opportunity to celebrate the friendship and strengthen ties further, especially in agriculture sector where both Vietnam and New Zealand have strengths and potential for further growth bilateral trade,” said New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, Haike Manning.


During his visit, Mr Mike Petersen will meet with Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat and Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh to discuss about Vietnam’s agricultural sector reform and dairy sector development. He will visit wet markets and supermarkets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city to understand predominant distribution channels for agricultural products in the nation.


He will also deliver a speech on global trade opportunities for agriculture producing countries like New Zealand and Vietnam for students from Hanoi University of Agriculture, visit TH True Milk factory in Nghe An province, and a meat processing company in Ho Chi Minh city.


Besides, he is expected to meet with New Zealand companies, local partners and agriculture stakeholders to discuss agri-business opportunities./.
