TRA VINH (VNS) – The first biological environment protection team in the Mekong Delta region has been set up in Tra Vinh Province to mobilise participation of residents in planting and protecting mangrove forests and in preventing unsustainable exploitation of aquatic products.

The team includes 100 local households living along Con Chim River in the province’s Chau Thanh District who earn a living by fishing with outdated equipment, threatening the resources of fisheries.

Oxfam, a non-governmental organisation, has funded the initiative with more than VND600 million ($28,600).

Poor households in the team have received financial support worth VND10-15 million ($470-710) each to help them change vocations and earn a stable income. – VNS
