Vietnam, U.S. to expand ties in various areas, including security

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and U.S. President Barack Obama have agreed that the two countries will expand bilateral cooperation in various areas, including trade and security.

The agreement was made at their talks held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on November 13, on the sidelines of the ninth East Asia Summit and other summits.



At the meeting, the two leaders expressed their delight at the encouraging development of the relations between the two countries, especially since they established the comprehensive partnership last year.


The two leaders emphasized bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, education, health care, humanitarian activities and clean energy, security, defense, human rights, and negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.


PM Dung said that Vietnam will work closely with the U.S .and other countries to speed up the TPP negotiation on the basis of balancing interests of all parties involved and giving developing members, including Vietnam, an appropriate transitional period to implement the TPP agreement.


Meanwhile, President Obama affirmed that during the TPP negotiation, the U.S. will give Vietnam necessary flexibilities that are in line with the interests of both sides.


The U.S. President said he wanted to see a Vietnam country that developed vigorously and prosperously.


He added that he has identified opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various fields.


According to AP, President Obama has pointed out many fields for bilateral cooperation, including trade and security. He added that the meeting has opened for cooperation and investment opportunities for both sides.


The two sides also exchanged views on important regional and international issues with a view to bolstering bilateral affiliation within relevant ASEAN forums, and actively contributing to maintaining regional peace, stability, security and cooperation, according to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA).


PM Dung highly valued the US’s clear stance on the need to maintain peace, stability, and


navigation security, safety and freedom, settle disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, exercise self-restraint, and not alter the status quo in the East Sea, VNA reported.


Meanwhile, Reuters cited President Obama as saying, “We very much share the belief that it is important for all countries, big and small, in the region to abide by rules-based norms in resolving disputes.”


The U.S. President also hailed the two countries’ signing of the agreement for cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear energy.


He expressed his belief that the bilateral ties in economics, security, defense, education, training, clean energy, and people-to-people exchange will be strengthened.
