Thach Kim Tuan broke his own Asian record to bag a gold medal at the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) World Championships 2014 in Kazakhstan on Saturday.
The 20-year-old weightlifter of Ho Chi Minh City successfully lifted 135kg in men’s 56kg snatch to break his Asian record of 134kg at the 2014 Asian Games (Asiad) in Incheon to win a gold.
He also won two silvers in clean-and-jerk and overall.
With the new snatch record, Tuan defeated the reigning world champion Om Yun Chol of North Korea who finished with 128kg and ranked fifth in the category.
Tuan, who is in his last year as a junior, also broke two junior world records- snatch and overall – in setting a total of 296kg. He had finished second in Incheon and this was an improvement of 2kg on his total there.
Both Tuan and Chol finished 296kg overall, and the North Korean weightlifter took a close win as he weighed four grams lighter than Tuan.
Chol said afterwards: “I am going to protect my titles. I will win in the 2016 Olympics.”
Tuan was disappointed to lose so narrowly, but delighted with his records and full of praise for the victory. “He is so good at the clean-and-jerk. I admire him so much,” he said.
The 2014 IWF World Championships will be held from November 8-16 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event also selects weightlifters for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
