Vietnamese frigates visit Brunei

PANO – The HQ-011 Dinh Tien Hoang and the HQ-012 Ly Thai To, two frigates of the Vietnam People’s Navy carrying more than 200 officers and sailors, led by Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Kiem, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy, on November 19th docked in Muara port, beginning an official visit to Brunei.

The three-day visit aims to strengthen mutual understanding and trust as well as bring the friendly ties between the two navies to a new height.



Vietnamese ambassador to Brunei Nguyen Truong Giang and Defence Attaché to Brunei Senior Colonel Nguyen Van Son were present at the ceremony welcoming the Vietnamese delegation and visited the two frigates.

During the Vietnamese delegation’s stay in Brunei, the Vietnamese delegation will pay a courtesy call to the Chief of Royal Brunei Navy and Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and the Vietnamese officers and sailors will join sports activities with the Royal Brunei Navy.


Vietnam and Brunei established their diplomatic ties in February 1992 and the two Ministries of Defence signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral defence cooperation in November 2005.

Since then, the two armies have boosted their cooperation in exchanging visits of delegations at all levels, sharing intelligence and information, training cadets, joining search and rescue and anti-piracy.


Notably, chiefs of the two navies on December 5th, 2013 in Brunei inked a memorandum of understanding on bilateral naval cooperation. This April, the Royal Brunei Navy’s vessel KDN Darulehsan visited Hai Phong, Vietnam.
