Veteran politician, Beji Caid Essebsi, 88, has been confirmed as winner of Tunisia’s first free presidential poll, the BBC reported.

He secured 55.68% of the vote in the run-off on December 22nd, defeating caretaker President, Moncef Marzouki (44.32%), the Head of the Electoral Commission said.

The Tunisian Presidential election was held on November 23rd, a month after the parliamentary election. It was the first regular presidential election after the Tunisian Revolution of 2011 and the adoption of the Constitution in January 2014.

The results of the run-off vote were announced by the Head of the Electoral Commission, Chafik Sarsar, who was visibly emotional.

In remarks broadcast by French TV, Essebsi said his election marked the start of Tunisia’s future. He said he wanted the nation to move forward united. He also saluted those who voted for his opponent.

Essebsi served under both former President Ben-Ali and Tunisia’s first post-independence president, Habib Bourguiba. As president, he is responsible for security, defense and foreign affairs.

Voting was largely pronounced free and fair, with a participation rate of 60 per cent, less than the nearly 70 per cent in the previous round and in recent legislative elections.

Essebsi’s political career began in earnest after Tunisia’s independence in 1956. As well as being one of President Habib Bourguiba’s advisors, he served as Interior Minister, Defence Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister./.
