Belgium’s former Queen Fabiola, the Spanish-born widow of the popular King Baudouin has passed away at the age of 86 at the Stuyvenberg Castle in Brussels. Prime Minister, Charles Michel, declared seven days of national mourning that would end after a state funeral at the hilltop Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula on December 12th in Brussels. King Philippe of Belgium said he was left with “great sadness” when he heard of the death of his aunt. Queen Fabiola (Fabiola de Mora y Aragón ) was born in 1928 into an aristocratic family in the Spanish capital of Madrid. Queen Fabiola of Belgium was the wife of Baudouin, King of the Belgians. She was Queen consort of Belgium for 33 years, between her wedding in 1960 and her husband’s death in 1993. The couple were unable to have children, and the crown then passed to her husband’s younger brother, King Albert II. She was admired for her deep involvement in humanitarian causes, particularly involving children and the rights of women in developing countries. Queen Fabiola had been in poor health for years, suffering from osteoporosis, as well as having never fully recovered from a lung inflammation she had in 2009./. |
