On December 21st, Chairman of the Uzbekistan’s Central Elections Commission Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdussalomov said about 88% of citizens voted in the election of members of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and local authorities. “The election is considered valid if at least 33 percent of people voted in accordance with Article 44, the law on “Election to the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan”, he said. 535 candidates from four parties including the Liberal Democratic Party, People’s Democratic Party, the Democratic Party Milly Tiklanish (National Revival) and the Social Democratic Party Adolat (Justice) competed to fill 135 seats in the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis (Lower House of the Uzbek parliament). The remaining 15 seats will automatically go to the Ecological Movement. It was found in 2008 and is made up of activists from pro-government environmentalist groups. President Islam Karimov has transferred some powers to parliament in recent years, including a mechanism for a vote of no confidence in the government and allowing the party with the majority of seats to nominate the prime minister. In 2012, Uzbekistan’s parliament made constitutional amendments, shortening the Presidential term from seven to five years. Uzbekistan’s Presidential poll will be held in March, 2015./. |
